The following is from tvguide online
THE END IS OUT THERE: Part two of The X-Files's season premiere Sunday night averaged only 9.4 million viewers — making it the lowest-rated episode since the Fox drama moved from Fridays to Sundays in 1996. Somewhere, David Duchovny is smiling.

From: The Jerusalem Post - 15 November 2001

Mulder's alive, but doesn't remember Scully. Krychek's got Skinner in the palm of his hand, and The X-Files keep on rolling. The problem is you have to drink about a gallon of coffee to stay up to 12:25 a.m., where Channel 2 has stuck the series. While that's fine for night owls like us, what about other viewers who enjoy the series but don't want to stay up quite that late?

Meanwhile, Lucy Lawless, aka Xena, has joined the cast for the show' s new, Mulder-less season in the US. The truth is out there, and it' s that the series isn't the same without David Duchovny.

The Atlanta Journal & Constitution - 10 November 2001

"The X-Files" 9 Sunday on Fox (70782) --- Here's another cliffhanger, but not as captivating as "Malcolm," and a far cry from funny. The show that should have ended a couple of seasons back (I speak as a former, big-time fan) sputters forward. There's not enough of Scully (Gillian Anderson), either. She's largely sidelined taking care of her mystery baby, which leaves the deeply uncharismatic Doggett (Robert Patrick) investigating the drownings of two men by an apparent amphibious killing machine. The latter is played by former "Xena" star Lucy Lawless, and she's the best thing about an episode that has far too many conspiracy theories floating around, and too little suspense. Grade: C

NZ Herald article "Lawless, The Lethal Mystery Woman" - 14 November 2001

This is an amusing little piece from Entertainment Weekly 16 November 2001
...."Lucy Lawless makes out underwater with Agent Doggett, and somewhere Gabrielle's throwing a big hissy fit."
Many thanks to Judy for that news

The following is from The Chicago Tribune - November 8, 2001
Lawless's character, Shannon McMahon ("Such an American name," Lawless says), could return -- although events in the Nov. 18 episode suggest otherwise.
Lawless says she did the guest shot "for love" because she respects Carter. But "the others would have to make sense, and a business sense, if you know what I mean. . . ."I know the producers have been very good to me, and I would love to be good to them and their show," Lawless says. However, "you work like a dog for six years and being the star of your own little show. And to go and be a fifth wheel on somebody else's would have to be rewarding in a lot of ways."

People Magazine - Lucy's X-cellent Adventure - 5 November 2001

From: Daily Record - 1 August 2001
XENA star Lucy Lawless has been brought in to boost The X-Files' flagging ratings after the departure of David "Mulder" Duchovny - even though the New Zealander's Warrior Princess show was axed because her fans switched off.

FROM SCIFIWIRE: Scully Still Central To 'X-Files' 9:00am ET, 22-August-01

Scully Still Central To X-Files Frank Spotnitz, an executive producer of Fox's The X-Files, told the Zap2It Web site that Gillian Anderson (Scully) will be a full participant in the show's upcoming ninth season, despite rumors to the contrary.

"We have full-time Gillian," Spotnitz told the site. "It's really a three-lead show, because you've got her and Robert [Patrick] and Annabeth [Gish]," who play Agents Doggett and Reyes. "That's what's making it so challenging for us this year, because we've never had to do that before. We had to do it somewhat when Mulder returned, but this is different."

Spotnitz added, "There are a lot of questions about the baby. OK, like, she and Mulder had sex, but she still was barren ... so how did that happen? ... What is the mystery of the baby? Why did the aliens hunt it down and then leave it? Can Scully be at peace with this question? I think that's the biggest issue. Then there's a bunch of new issues that spring up around that."

The ninth season will feature many new story arcs, including one centering on former Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless, who appears in the first four episodes. "Also, the Doggett-and-Reyes- versus- the-FBI [one], and is it safe to work at the FBI, given the fact that there seem to be aliens walking around the corridors?" Spotnitz asked. "There were a lot of immediate things we knew we had to attend to our first day back at work."

Spotnitz also hinted that the show's signature motto, "The truth is out there," may change. "I think that's going to happen," he said. "You'll see changes there. You'll see a number of changes, actually, which I can't divulge yet. Keep your eyes open, don't go to the kitchen. We'll reward you if you're patient." The X-Files returns Nov. 4. (many thanks to Dianna S. for the transcript)

Season Nine opens in two parts, with both episodes written by Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz. The first show, entitled "Nothing Important Happened Today," is directed by Kim Manners and will debut on Sunday, Nov. 4th at 9PM ET/8C. It will also feature the debut of the character played by Lucy Lawless. Its conclusion, "Nothing Important Happened Today II," is directed by Tony Wharmby and will air on

Nov. 11th.Lucy to guest star in X-Files for a few episodes! Lucy has now signed on for a multi-episode gig on the upcoming season of ``The X-Files '' She is set to appear on the show's first two episodes. There's a chance she could do more episodes, though nothing's been decided yet.

This is an unconfirmed rumor:  The secrecy around the role to be played my Lucy Lawless is not because of her specific role in the show, which will be somewhat frequent, but because of the stunning results of her character. Lucy Lawless will play a shadow character, a new emmisary of the Cancer Man, William B. Davis. A new Krychek if you will. Her first appearance will lead to CM's reappearance at the end of the second episode. Not sure where this storyline will lead, but I am positive that the Cancer Man is back on the show.
