The following is from Kiwi Attic

Lucy on the front page of this issue of the Canvas. This is a massive 28cm x 33cm front cover and discusses the pitfalls of celebrity endorsements for charities. Lucy is of course a charities dream having her support however there are others who lend their name to causes that does not suit themselves or the charity and is often detrimental to the cause. The article eludes to Lucy's work with the Starship and her frequent visit without the cameras which many stars demand to further their "goodwill" and image. A great pic and article of the issue of celebrity endorsements!

Lucy Dices With Death - Sunday Star Times 29 June 2003

Lucy Lawless had her "most civilised encounter with death" when she jumped off Auckland's Sky Tower yesterday in a bid to stop child abuse. Lawless, supporting Puawaitahi, the country's first multi-agency centre to investigate and treat child abuse and neglect, did the sky jump with her daughter Daisy, 14, from one of the world's highest jumps. "It was fantastic. I wasn't going to do it because I've been sick with the flu but I got up there and I just had to," Lawless said Click here to read more of the article from the Sunday Star Times and the larger scan

30 April 2003   Lucy was on the Holmes Show in NZ yesterday discussing the change in the name for The Starship Hospital. It was originally going to be renamed Auckland City Hospital Children's Services. The board did a backflip after a huge backlash from people including Lucy. They are now putting back the name Starship into the name of the hospital but now calling it The Starship Children's Department (!!!).

28 April 2003

Lucy Lawless, a trustee of the fundraising Starship Foundation and the most famous person associated with the hospital, has called the change a nonsense. "The place will always be, in people's hearts, the Starship. Visually, that's what it looks like, so why strip it of official recognition?"  She and other trustees were to discuss the implications at a regular meeting at the hospital today. Ms Lawless believed it would be harder to raise money for something "that sounds like something from the socialist era".

3 May 2003   The following is from the NZ Herald on moving past the name change of the Starship Hospital to what is more important - the kids.
Even Lucy Lawless, the face of the foundation, had her diplomatic face firmly in place. The fight over whether the Starship is a hospital, department, service or dastardly brandname was on hold. "This occasion is just about making kids better," said the former Warrior Princess. She hoped the kids would be made better not only by the live diagnostic video-conferencing, but also through the system's potential for training and multi-venue, real-time brainstorming.
