Xena's real-life battle

Lucy Lawless, star of the hit sword and sorcery TV series, Xena: Warrior Princess, earns as much as $30,000 an episode, but she is paying an even higher price for her success.

Kung-fu expert, opera singer, and the surprise toast of Broadway, where she is starring in the US production of Grease, [MaryD: ** This is a very strange article. Lucy had an accident on the Tonight Show in October 1996. She did not go to Broadway for Grease until September 1997. The date footer for the magazine is wrong and it should be October 1997 ] 28-year-old New Zealander Lucy Lawless has won a personal battle for the love of her nine-year-old daughter, Daisy.

"At first Daisy hated Xena: Warrior Princess - she blamed it for the breakdown of my marriage," confides Lucy. "Fortunately, she's more comfortable with it now. She realises the show is not going to take me away from her."
Daisy (pictured right with Lucy) lives with her father, bar manager Garth Lawless and sees her mum only at weekends.

Since the phenomenal success of Xena, screened on Network Ten at 7.30pm on Saturday nights, Lucy has become a role model for teenage girls around the world.
