The action-adventure drama series Spartacus: Blood and Sand is the latest to be added to the Starz line-up of original programming. Premiering on January 22, 2010, the highly anticipated epic story that promises to be brutal, bloody and sexy, is being brought to life by executive producers Steven S. DeKnight, who is also the series' head writer, Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi.

Lucy Lawless, best known for her role in Xena: Warrior Princess, portrays Lucretia, who along with her husband, Batiatus (The Mummy's John Hannah), own the Ludus gladiator camp, as well as Spartacus (Australian actor Andy Whitfield). The couple has fallen on hard times financially and has bought Spartacus hoping his fighting prowess will help them regain their status in the brutal world of gladiatorial contests.

Spartacus is a soldier in the Roman Auxiliary who has been taken prisoner and, as punishment for defying a Roman Legate, he has been sentenced to die in the gladiator area. But after surviving numerous fights, his sentence is commuted and he has been sold as a slave to be trained as a gladiator.

Actors Lucy Lawless and Peter Mensah, who plays Batiatus' most loyal and trusted slave Doctore, joined DeKnight, Tapert and Raimi at the Television Critics Association Press Tour to discuss this entirely new vision of the ancient legend.

In a presentation today at the annual Television Critics Association conference in Pasadena, the producers and stars of the upcoming series Spartacus: Blood and Sand emphasized that it pushes the limits of what's been seen on television, with graphic violence and plenty of sex and nudity, but that it's all in the service of a well-told story involving compelling characters.

"Nudity?" said co-star Lucy Lawless after being asked if she gets naked in the the first season. "I'm afraid so. Not entirely, no, and I'm kind of praying that day never comes."

During the Spartacus panel, Lawless was asked if she's going to be naked during the first season, as the show involves a lot of sex scenes. "I'm afraid so," she said. She plays Lucretia, a "proprietor of a camp for gladiators." She takes up with a gladiator in the hope of having a baby. It's tough for her to do those scenes because, while she tries to keep in fantastic shape, "when you get on set, you get the 'freshman 15'," she told the scrum afterwords.

Near the end of the scrum, I asked her if she thought a certain fanboy segment (coughXenacough) will be happy to see her nude. Her response included her experience seeing Caligula when she was a teenager. Say one thing for Lucy; she's not the demure type.

In the "more than we need to know" department, apparently the show utilizes a prosthetic for when the various gladiators appear nude. Yes, that kind of prosthetic. "We had to create the 'Kirk Douglas', as it's aptly named, so people had a prosthetic they could wear," said EP Rob Tappert. Lawless said they hang it up in the prop truck "next to all the merkins." Must be a fun set.

Oh, Sam Raimi is also one of the EPs; he had the concept of the show, and was involved at the start, but the latest Spider-Man film will call him away from the rest of the season.

Rob Tapert on an unexpected homage to Stanley Kubrick's "Spartacus" in Starz' "Spartacus: Blood and Sand": "[T]here's a great deal of nudity, both male and female. And some guys are not as well-endowed as other guys, so we had to create the Kirk Douglas, as it was aptly named, so that certain actors would have a prosthetic that they could wear and feel comfortable." (To which series co-star Lucy Lawless added, "That thing gets shared around, though. At the moment it's pinned to the wall next to all the merkins in the makeup truck.")

I've received quite a few emails about the topic of Lucy and her naked antics on Spartacus. Some good, some not so good. Please don't try to engage me in long emails about why Lucy is doing what she is doing and what my thoughts are on it. Lucy has made her choice and until we see the actual show; we're going by the trailer. Of course TPTB will show the most gory or nekkid scenes to grab everyone's attention. Boy did they get everyone's attention! It's been a feeding frenzy.

My thoughts on the matter of Lucy in her birthday suit is this:

Lucy has indicated that she will be appearing nude on the new show Spartacus during the 2009 Comic Con Panel, AUSXIP will not be posting any images of Lucy completely naked. If/When Lucy does go starkers and certain areas are shown, our wonderful friend Pixelation will come into play.

There will be HD Screencaptures from the show of Lucy and the rest of the cast but certain body parts will be pixelated or not captured.

Bitch Slap Video of Mother Superior and Sister Batril talk about their roles on Bitch Slap. This video was released quite some time ago but it has now been added to the Bitch Slap Movie Facebook page. Click on the image to watch two very gifted actors trying to outdo each other. In this instance I think Renee wins this round if only for the rosary beads and praying advice. The look on Lucy's face is just priceless.
 

Lucy Lawless is hitting the gym to prepare for nudity required in her new role in upcoming series Spartacus.

New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless says her latest sword-and-sandals series for television, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, is "big fun back on the small screen".

She was speaking as the United States cable television channel, Starz, unveiled its trailer for the gladiator series at a major fan gathering in California, Comic-Con, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Billed as looking like the film 300 - which was based on a graphic novel - with the nudity of HBO's Rome, and the violence of Gladiator, Spartacus will have "a death toll like nothing you've seen on television before," producer Steven DeKnight told the audience.

Lawless said the nudity had forced her to hit the gym.

"I do have to work out," she said. "Being naked on-screen is no fun."

The series has already begun production in New Zealand and is scheduled to go to air on Starz next January.

Lawless is playing Lucretia, who along with her husband Batiatus, own the Ludus (a gladiator camp) - as well as Spartacus.

The couple has fallen on hard times financially and has bought Spartacus, hoping his fighting prowess will help them regain their status in the brutal world of gladiatorial contests.

Best known for portraying Xena: Warrior Princess in the long-running TV series filmed in New Zealand, Lawless has also appeared on the critically acclaimed science fiction series Battlestar Galactica.

Spartacus is being played by Briton Andy Whitfield (McLeod's Daughters, Packed to the Rafters), who lives in Australia, and the series is being produced by Sam Raimi and Joshua Donen, and Lawless' husband, Rob Tapert.

Other cast members include Manu Bennett (30 Days of Night, The Condemned) as Crixus, the top gladiator at the training camp, Antonio Te Maioha (Xena: Warrior Princess, Legend of the Seeker) as Barca, Batiatus' bodyguard and hit man; and Craig Parker (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Legend of the Seeker) as Glaber, a Roman legate, who blames Spartacus for his failed military campaign.

The series is loosely set around historical events in the Roman Republic in 73 BC when a slave revolt grew to more than 120,000 fighters before being put down by the Roman army.

Holy Moly this is incredible! Absofrigginlutely incredible. I was excited about the show before I saw visuals and now that I've seen the visuals, WOW. I LOVED the movie 300 and anything that is set in Rome or Greece and this looks to be on par with that and beyond. Lucy looks AMAZING. Andy looks INCREDIBLE! Rob has created another gem!

Lucy Lawless of "Spartacus" will be at Comic-Con on Friday.

Starz is doing a big push for its January series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" at Comic-Con. The series stars Lucy Lawless of "Xena" and "Battlestar Galactica" fame and newcomer Andy Whitfield as Spartacus, the soldier who becomes a slave, then a gladiator in Roman times.

Everywhere I looked during preview night I saw Spartacus stuff, and before the Friday panel, Starz will be giving away fan packs with tons of goodies inside. They are planning a Spartacus iPhone game, a motion comic and already have created a companion comic book with Chicago publishing company Devil's Due.

I stopped by the Devil's Due booth Thursday and talked the company president Josh Blaylock. He showed me the first issue of the Spartacus comic, which is filled with some amazing artwork of some very gruesome gladiator fighting. If the show is that action-packed, it's going to be amazing. I just hope I don't pass out from all the gore.

I'll be attending the "Spartacus" panel and press interview time. So if you have any questions for Lucy Lawless or the creators, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert among them, shoot me a note in the comments section.

With the flurry of PR for the show in full swing, I've added an images section with the latest PR photos officially released by Starz. AUSXIP has been added as a media outlet for these images. All images are copyrighted to Starz.

Reports from this week's 2020 target consultation meetings suggest that Nick Smith and Tim Groser (replaced in Christchurch by Adrian Macey, NZ's climate ambassador) have had to face up to pretty solid support for a 40% target. Greenpeace laid on a star-studded night in Auckland (Jim Salinger told me today he enjoyed his date with Lucy Lawless), and there were certainly plenty of Sign On and 350.org people in the Christchurch session, as well as another voluble Gareth. The ODT and 350.org.nz report that Dunedin was much the same.

San Diego Comic-Con 2009 Interview Planning

San Diego Comic-Con, the Mecca of all comic book conventions, is fast approaching. (July 23-26.) Of course, I'll be attending and covering it for my podcast, Comic News Insider (Sponsored by Dynamic Forces with a weekly global audience in the thousands.) Normally, this is a more "go out and party with friends" type con as it's so overwhelming trying to get interviews with folks. That's why I usually do more interviews at smaller shows. However, this year, I have been getting contacted by TONS of TV/Film type PR peoples about setting up possible interviews. You may remember last year how I got most of the cast of Pushing Daisies thanks to good friend of the show, Bryan Fuller (the series creator). His publicist also hooked me up with other Warner Bros. shows.

This year, I wasn't sure what to expect. I have contacted a few on my own that are possibly going to happen out there. Felicia Day, Amber Benson and a follow up with Brea Grant. But suddenly, my inbox is being inundated with interview requests from publicists/PR folks representing such folks as Lucy Lawless, David Tennant, John Barrowman, Big Bang Theory cast, Fringe cast, Robert Englund, Julie Benz, Tim Burton, The Middleman cast, Seth Green, Walt Disney studios, various video game companies, and so many more. I'm literally getting about 10 emails a day from various people. Honestly, I don't expect to get many of them. But a few would be great especially the BBC types as I don't know when I'd get an opportunity with them again.

A new message from Lucy to Sign On Supporters including a new photo of Lucy with orange/red hair. We've seen Lucy with black, brown, red, blond and now orange/red. Lucy had to rush from the set of Spartacus to the meeting...with wig and all.

A huge thank-you to everyone who came along to the Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin target consultations in the past few days. Hundreds have turned up at each meeting.

If you've been unable to attend your local meeting, please submit a short statement via the Sign On website, which we'll display to Environment Minister, Nick Smith in a public way. You can also attend the "online" consultation meeting on Monday 20th July (details below).

I had to rush to the Auckland meeting straight from work on set, wig and all. I was glad to be there. It was fascinating, frustrating and dramatic. I highly recommend it as a night out!

To Nick Smith, we delivered a very strong message that a 40% carbon reduction by 2020 is the only acceptable goal. This is in line with what scientists are now telling us is the minimum target for staving off global catastrophe.

For about 40 minutes Dr Smith was reasonably impressive with his presentation and bar graphs and then he dropped what for me was a clanger. He responded to one question that no, he would not oppose digging up Happy Valley in order to sell coal to India because, let's face it, they'd just get it from somewhere else! I am paraphrasing but that was the gist of it.

It seems that this government does have a moral compass. And on it Business points North. Thus, it is VITAL that as many business people as possible impress upon our minister and our international negotiators, Tim Groser and Adrian Macey, the opportunities that green business models will afford us. Tell us your success stories.

Tell them what degradation of the environment and climate will cost your business.

And tell your friends. We need all hands on deck. If Germany and Scotland can set emission reduction goals of 40% and 42%, we can too.

We have a great deal of know how. What we lack presently is political will and policy. Let's give our Prime Minister the mandate to seek the necessary 40% reduction by 2020.

No one ever won gold by setting the bar at a comfortable height.

We can do this!

09 July 2009 Update

Update: Okay I received a very nice email this morning from Chad at Crackle/ Sony Pictures who read this thread and wanted to clear up the confusion (thanks Chad!). So that ends that confusion

I came across your thread, and sensed your confusion regarding the upcoming Angel of Death DVD. I just checked with our people at Amazon and here is what happened: Night Stalker was incorrectly mapped to Angel of Death from IMDB. Amazon has resolved the IMDB issue and has added the Angel of Death synopsis to the Angel of Death detail page to assure customers find the DVD they are looking for. Angel of Death is Angel of Death, not Night Stalker.


28 June 2009 Update

Seems the confusion reigns with the Angel of Death / Night Stalker DVD. One entry on Amazon has it as Night Stalker (released 7 July as reported yesterday) and another entry on Amazon has it as Angel of Death and a DVD release of 28 July 2009.

Why is it so? (and for Aussies who get that reference...don't try the egg in the bottle trick <g> and for those that don't..check this out - nothing to do with Angel of Death/Night Stalker but my mind wandered to my favourite professor...).

Okay Barbara has been doing some digging for me (as good sidekicks do) and came up with this explanation:

Crackle of Death is a 1976 film, the third produced in the Night Stalker film series. It combined the Kolchak: The Night Stalker episodes Firefall and The Energy Eater with additional narration by Darren McGavin as Kolchak.

Is it a coincidence that we find Crackle, 'of death', and Night Stalker in the same place?

And another reference to Night Stalker (no bets on the fact Lucy is NOT in this movie) from dreadcentral.com

That film will almost assuredly be better than what Ulli Lommel has in store for us with Night Stalker, which is coming to DVD on September 8th courtesy of North American Pictures.

It's based on the true story of satanic serial killer Richard Ramirez (AKA "The Night Stalker"), but given this is a Ulli Lommel movie, there's a high probability that the only aspect of the movie that has anything in common with the true facts of the case is that there is a serial killer named Richard Ramirez and he was a Satanist. The rest will most likely be the typical Lommel no-budget minimalist bullshit with delusions of artistic grandeur.

Now do you want a good laugh? If you click over to Amazon right now, you can pre-order yourself a copy of Night Stalker for only $48.99. Hey, that's a $21 savings off the list price of $69.99.

Either someone at Amazon screwed up the pricing information or Ulli Lommel is even more delusional than we all thought.

27 June 2009 Update: Just an update (so people won't get confused). The Angel of Death DVD is now being called "Night Stalker" and it's listing Lucy in the main credits. The release date is 7 July 2009.

Sign On ambassadors to attend Auckland target consultation

Auckland Tuesday 7 July - Several ambassadors from Greenpeace's Sign On climate campaign (www.signon.org.nz), including actress Lucy Lawless and IPCC Nobel Peace Prize-winning climate scientist Dr Jim Salinger, will attend the Government's public consultation on emission reduction targets in Auckland tonight.

They will be pushing for a 40 per cent by 2020 emissions reduction target.

"John Key must carry our message to Copenhagen this December - that New Zealanders care desperately about the health of this planet," said Lawless. "The catastrophe of global warming will make the recession look like a minor historical footnote. Something has to change."

Oscar-nominated New Zealand actress and Sign On ambassador Keisha Castle-Hughes, who has just returned from a trip to the Cook Islands documenting the impacts of climate change in the region, will also attend the consultation.

Greenpeace Executive Director Bunny McDiarmid said the success of Sign On, which calls for a 40 by 2020 target and now has nearly 62,000 signatories, should give the Government an early indication of the strength of feeling among New Zealanders over the issue.

"An emissions reduction target of anything less than 40 per cent by 2020 would signal to the world that New Zealand is not prepared to do its bit. New Zealand's international standing and our clean and green image, upon which many jobs depend, would be irreparably damaged."

Greenpeace has rejected an assessment by front group for big polluters, the Greenhouse Policy Coalition, which says the 40 by 2020 target will come at a high cost to individual New Zealanders.

"Their modeling assumes that we just keep on doing what we are doing and make no efforts to reduce emissions," said McDiarmid. "I'm reminded of previous work from Infometrics on behalf of polluters that argued polluters should pay none of the costs of their emissions and taxpayers would bear the whole cost, like a weird form of reversed communism."

Founder of 42 Below Vodka and Sign On ambassador Geoff Ross has previously said climate change presents an amazing business opportunity for New Zealand. "This is our biggest opportunity as a country to create wealth since we got refrigeration on ships and we could export butter and lamb. So rather than debating the measures, the science and entertaining the nay sayers, lets get on with it. And do what business should always do - pick a social change and win from it; in fact lead it."

The latest official world climate science congress (1) makes it clear - to avert catastrophic climate change will require developed countries like New Zealand to adopt a 40 per cent reduction target by 2020 on 1990's emission levels. New Zealand is one of the last remaining developed countries without a target.

Dr Salinger: "Our climate is changing rapidly. For example, a 1 degree C increase in New Zealand's temperature over the last century has melted half the ice in the Southern Alps, and for the first time in over 100,000 years both the northwest and northeast passages in the Arctic have been open. Rapid, sustained and effective emission reduction targets are required now to avoid dangerous climate change."

The Sign On campaign was launched one month ago. A wide range of high-profile New Zealanders are backing the campaign, including Lucy Lawless, Rhys Darby, Cliff Curtis, Robyn Malcolm, chef Peter Gordon, Warehouse founder Stephen Tindall and Geoff Ross. See signon.org.nz for more information.

Just got this update email from Greenpeace Sign On Campaign from Lucy thanking all the Sign On Supporters:

Thanks for speaking up and Signing On.

We have to tell our government the financial recession is not an excuse to do nothing.

In the next two weeks we've got a chance to do exactly that - at public consultation meetings over New Zealand's climate change target. Please turn up to make your voice heard, I will be.

The catastrophe of global warming will make the recession look like a sour little joke. Clearly, something has to change. Nobody ever went out of business by adapting to the times.

John Key must carry our message to Copenhagen this December - that we care desperately about the health of this planet.

There are brilliant minds in science, engineering and agriculture who know how to reduce our contribution to climate change.

Let's not waste time and knowledge.  The Earth has been so good to us. What have we done for her lately?
